Librivox recording of Walden by Henry David Thoreau Read by Gord Mackenzie. Walden by Henry David Thoreau is one of the best-known non-fiction books written by an American. Published in 1854, it details Thoreau’s life for two years, two months, and two days around the shores of Walden Pond. Walden is neither a novel nor a true autobiography, but a social critique of the Western World, with each chapter heralding some aspect of humanity that needed to be either renounced or praised. Along with...

LibriVox recording of The Divine Comedy, by Dante Alighieri. Translated by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. The Divine Comedy (Italian: Commedia, later christened “Divina” by Giovanni Boccaccio), written by Dante Alighieri between 1308 and his death in 1321, is widely considered the central epic poem of Italian literature, the last great work of literature of the Middle Ages and the first great work of the Renaissance. A culmination of the medieval world-view of the afterlife, it establishes the...

Alexander the Great was one of the most successful military commanders in history, and was undefeated in battle. By the time of his death, he had conquered most of the world known to the ancient Greeks. Alexander the Great is one of many biographies aimed at young people written by Jacob Abbott and his brother. The biographies are written in such a way that makes them appealing and easily accessible to everyone. - Written by Wikipedia and Lizzie Driver For further information, including links...

Librivox recording of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. Read by Sam Stinson . Romeo and Juliet is an early tragedy by William Shakespeare about two teenage "star-cross'd lovers" whose "untimely deaths" ultimately unite their feuding households. Paradise Lost is the first epic of English literature written in the classical style. John Milton saw himself as the intellectual heir of Homer, Virgil, and Dante, and sought to create a work of art which fully represented the most basic tenets of the Protestant faith. His work, which was dictated from memory and transcribed by his daughter, remains as one of the most powerful English poems. (Summary by Caeristhiona) This is a recording of the text of Milton's first edition of 1667, which had...

A LibriVox recording of The Imitation of Christ, by Thomas a Kempis, translated by Rev. William Benham. Read by David Barnes . The Imitation of Christ is widely considered one of the greatest manuals of devotion in Christianity. The life of Christ is presented as the highest study possible to a mortal, as Jesus' teachings far excel all the teachings of the saints. LibriVox recording of All of Grace, by Charles H. Spurgeon. Read by MaryAnn Spiegel. HE WHO SPOKE and wrote this message will be greatly disappointed if it does not lead many to the Lord Jesus. It is sent forth in childlike dependence upon the power of God the Holy Ghost, to use it in the conversion of millions, if so He pleases. No doubt many poor men and women will take up this little volume, and the Lord will visit them with grace. To answer this end, the very plainest language has been...

LibriVox recording of The Pursuit of God, by Aiden Wilson Tozer. Read by David Leeson. "As the heart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God." This thirst for an intimate relationship with God, claims A.W. Tozer, is not for a select few, but should be the experience of every follower of Christ. But, he asserts, it is all too rare when believers have become conditioned by tradition to accept standards of mediocrity, and the church struggles with formality...

The Aleppo Codex was the oldest extant Hebrew Masoretic manuscript of the Old Testament until many pages were lost during a riot in 1947. It is believed by many to be the most authoritative copy of the Hebrew Bible in the masorah tradition. The text was verified and vocalized by Aaron ben Asher, the last and most prominent member of the Masoretic grammarians from Tiberias. This edition contains some old photos of currently missing pages and a recovered fragment.

Aldous Huxley gave this speech to a Berkley audience, in which he admits that his novels such as "Brave New World" were not just fiction, but real blueprints for types of controlled and enslaved societies. A shocking look at the results of the Fabian Society and the Cecil Rhodes Round Table efforts to resurrect the British empire, control of the United States, and dominate the planet.
